Youth push for voice on projects BY GABRIELLE STUART A group of students have big plans for Halswell, and would like to create a skate park, hang-out spaces and youth events in the area. The 19 students will meet this week to work on plans for the projects, to put forward to the city council. The Halswell Youth Voice group was formed last month, after the Halswell Liason Group held a special youth workshop as a one-off event to collect ideas. More than 30 students attended

the workshop, and they decided to form a group which would meet monthly, to see if they could make their ideas reality. Organiser Kate Cleverly said it was exciting to see so many young people in Halswell who were passionate about their community. She said that the projects were all completely student-led. “Our intention was to engage young people in their community, rather than council coming in and saying this is what we’re going to do.” •Turn to page 2

Local charitable trust Community Energy Action is collecting curtains from demolished homes, lining them and giving them away to needy families. Carole Marinan from Sockburn is one of the many people who benefited from free curtains from the curtain bank. She heard about the curtain bank through a nephew. “I had a sheet up in the lounge as a curtain. It always felt cold going up to the windows,” she said. “I don’t have a lot of money so I was absolutely thrilled to hear about the curtain bank. It felt like Christmas.” She was very grateful for the curtains. “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s definitely changed the warmth and look of the house.” She recommended that other people who didn’t have good curtains go to the curtain bank. “They are very welcoming and so helpful.” The charitable trust curtain bank has been recycling curtains for nearly 20 years, how-

COZY: Sockburn resident Carole Marinan has a warmer home after receiving new curtains through the Community Energy Action charitable trust. “We expect to do a lot more this year. We are very grateful for the sponsorship of Genesis Energy and a lotteries grant which allows us to do this work.” A lot of heat is lost through single pane windows and good curtains can help to keep the heat in. Anybody who cannot afford good curtains can use the curtain bank. Homeowners, private tenants and Housing NZ or city council tenants are all eligible. Anyone interested in receiving free curtains can phone Community Energy Action on 0800 GET WARM or 374 7222 or visit www.cea.co.nz for more information.

ever, this year it has had more curtains donated than ever. Trust chief executive Caroline Shone said that with so many houses, hotels and businesses being demolished, the curtains had been flooding in. “We received more than twice the amount of curtains last year than the year before. It’s great, as we have been able to help more people that need curtains. “Anyone who cannot afford curtains, please just give us a call, we’re here to help.” Last year the curtain bank received more than 24,000 sq m of curtain fabric, more than twice the amount of the year before, and helped nearly 500 families with free curtains.

Hard work is adding up for young Helina When it comes to maths, 11-yearold Helina Pa is in a league of her own. The year 6 pupil is solving calculus problems usually seen in the final year of high school at the Kumon Education Centre in Ilam, where she is the most advanced student for her age in the math programme in New Zealand. The Ilam School pupil enrolled in Kumon when she was in year 3 and has come a long way since she struggled with multiplication. “It feels really amazing to be so advanced because I didn’t know how to do some of the maths at the start but I didn’t give up so now I know how to do it. “Learning maths is easy since I’ve done Kumon; I especially like algorithms because they’re really fun to solve,” she said. With her advanced learning, Helina is able to help her friends at school and her younger brother at home. “I like helping people and I like teaching my little brother things at home too. He’s five. I teach him the ABCs and how to count numbers,” she said.

HAPPY: Rangi Ruru year 12 musicians Grace Leehan (violin), Amy Ga Hee Lee (piano) and Geeny Moon (french horn) received the KBB Award for the best group containing any of woodwind, brass or percussion at the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest National Finals last week. Helina said she was feeling confident about learning in high school and beyond. “I feel prepared to move into high school and it feels really good because I already know a lot of the maths that I’ll have to do,” she said. Helina’s mother, Loan Pa, said she couldn’t believe how far her daughter had come with her maths. “When she started at Kumon, her maths at school wasn’t very good but she has got better and better and we can’t believe that she’s in year 6 and can already do year 13 maths.” Helina’s advice to other students is to never give up and to practise until you’re confident with your work.

Repair and strengthening work is close to completion on the Hei Hei Community Centre link building, which is expected to open this month. Work is scheduled to begin on the main hall this month. The building on Wycola Ave was closed in 2012 because it was identified as earthquake prone. It was assessed at having a seismic capacity of 18 per cent of the New Building Standard, well be-

low minimum levels. The cost of repairing the building was estimated at about $553,000. Alex Aitken from the Gilberthorpes Estate Residents’ Association said that as well as the strengthening work, a new heating unit and flooring had been installed at the link building. He said the building had been leased out as a base for several community groups over the years, but most had found new bases in other parts of the city.

Canty students claim rocket record A Canterbury University studentbuilt supersonic rocket has achieved the highest recorded altitude worldwide. The small supersonic rocket launch from near Tekapo on July 26 was an attempt to break the New Zealand and world I-class altitude records which stood at 1117m and 4324m respectively. Canterbury University rocketry research project member and postgraduate student David Wright said they attempted to obtain the New Zealand record in December 2013 using a slightly larger research rocket called Melissa. However, a transmitter failure meant that the maximum altitude was never verified. Mr Wright said he decided to design and construct a highlyoptimised rocket to make a more serious attempt – this time at the world record. The 740mm rocket, named Milly, was launched with the help of PhD Student George Buchanan and other members of the Canterbury University rocketry project near Lake Tekapo. From launch, the rocket, reached speeds in excess of 2000km/h and accelerated so fast it broke the sound barrier just 70m above the ground. During this flight GPS data showed that the rocket reached altitudes in excess of 4889m eclipsing both the previous New Zealand and world records. “By recording the highest ever flight for an I-class rocket we hope

Kirkwood Intermediate School pupils have made gifts for residents at St Nicholas Hospital, a care home for the elderly. The 19 pupils spent seven weeks designing and creating the gifts for the residents. Pupils made cushions with a Kiwiana theme from vintage woollen blankets, appliqued small bags for medical equipment and larger bags for residents to attach to walker-frames. They also made colourful fabric activity books for residents, who have limited mobility. The books will stimulate and encourage hand exercise for joints stiff with arthritis. A Kirkwood spokeswoman said residents were “absolutely thrilled” with the gifts. “Faces, both young and elderly, lit up into big smiles. Late last week I stood at the rear of a house in Bewdley St, Spreydon, and reflected on just how unfair life can be. In front of me was the remains of a house that until that afternoon had been the family home of a very elderly couple. If the gardens remaining were anything to go by the house would have been immaculate and neat as a pin. Instead there was a mess of burnt and broken timbers. Everything was either destroyed or severely damaged by heat, smoke or fire. There was no insurance. In their 80s and 90s this couple had lost everything. That’s bloody unfair. The fire started from an unattended pot of oil on the stove.

The house had pinex ceilings. Once the fire got going it ripped through the property. No amount of firefighting was ever going to save it. The owners have very generously agreed to the Fire Service running an “open home” at their house. They don’t want others to go through what they have suffered. So from 9am to noon on Saturday, August 16, 25 Bewdley St will be open for anyone to have a look. It’s so damaged you wont be able to go inside. However, because it’s so damaged you will be able to clearly see the devastation. It will be a sobering experience. Our thanks go out to Age Concern which has found a furnished flat for the victims. And to the other agencies that helped. Still makes you want to cry though.

JNBY New Zealand, located on the corner of Aikmens and Papanui roads in the centre of Merivale, is an icon for their contemporary, design-driven women’s apparel. Takeaways at home Big burgers Serves 4 BURGER BUNS Cut 4 burger buns in half for your tops and bottoms. Use another 2 buns to get your middles (or clubs) by cutting the very top and bottom off them (discard these pieces) and slicing the remaining part of the bun into 2 to get middles from each bun. Brush cut sides of tops, bottoms and middles with a little olive oil and toast on a hot plate (or sandwich press), pressing them down lightly. BEEF PATTIES Season 500g quality mark beef mince with salt and pepper and a little lemon zest. Portion into 8 pieces (62g each) and press into thin patties using a round cutter the size of your buns. Layer on to squares of baking paper and chill until ready to cook. To cook, heat a small amount of oil in a pan. When hot sear patties quickly until they just colour. Salt and pepper the top side, flip and turn off the heat. Add a cheese slice to 4 of the patties. Leave to rest and cook through for a minute. PICKLES Source a pickle that’s spicy and sweet and yet a little bit tart.

LETTUCE Roll iceberg lettuce leaves into tight cigar shapes, then finely cut into long thin strips with a sharp knife. ONION Use a sharp knife to cut 2 shallots into a super-fine dice. Or use onions if you wish. Shallots will give a milder bite. CHEESE Chesdale smoked cheese slices are what you’re after here. You’ll need 4. BURGER SAUCE Whiz ½ cup mayonnaise, 2 Tbsp piccalilli, 1 Tbsp yellow (American) mustard, 1 tsp paprika, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder and 1 Tbsp white vinegar in a food processor to form a smooth sauce. Chill for at least an hour for the flavours to develop and mingle. TO BUILD YOUR BURGERS Spread the bottom of your bun with sauce, a sprinkling of onion and some lettuce. Place a pattie with cheese on it cheeseside down and top with the middle part of the bun. Add more sauce to the top of the middle bun, some more lettuce, some pickles and a meat pattie without cheese. Top with the top of the bun.

Fried flounder

Serves 1 This is a simple and delicious way to serve fresh flounder - a good source of vitamin D to help counteract winter’s lack of sunshine. DIRECTIONS Lightly dredge a whole flounder in wellseasoned flour. Heat a little olive oil and butter until foaming. Add the flounder and gently pan fry until nicely coloured on each side. Remove fish to rest, and deglaze the pan with chopped capers, fresh lemon juice, parsley and to finish, a knob of butter. To serve, pour sauce over flounder and

Mixed mushrooms on sourdough

Serves 4 Mushrooms on toast is an oldie but a goodie. Often overlooked, I think they are superb at any time of the day. Mushrooms are rich in nutrients. Fried in butter and fresh herbs, and served on a crisp slice of toasted Wild Wheat kumara sourdough, is the way to go. INGREDIENTS 3 Tbsp Shallots, finely diced 100g Butter 2 cups Shiitake mushrooms, sliced 2 cups Field mushrooms, sliced 1 Tbsp Flat leaf (Italian) parsley, chopped 2 cups Button mushrooms, sliced 1 Tbsp Fresh oregano, chopped 1 tsp Lemon juice 4 slices Sourdough bread

garnish with fresh lemon wedges, parsley and a sprinkle of sea salt. DIRECTIONS Melt the butter over a low heat, add the shallot or onion and gently fry for 2-3 minutes. Turn the heat up to high, add the mushrooms, season with salt and cook until caramelised and golden. Add the lemon juice and herbs, season with flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve on top of buttered toasted sourdough. Tip: Using a large frying pan, cook half the mushrooms at a time. This will prevent the mushrooms from stewing in their own juices. Ensure your mushrooms are completely free of any dirt or grit. I use a pastry brush or a damp paper towel to clean them. Make sure your serving plates are nice and hot.

Kirkwood Intermediate is a well-resourced school, with eight specialist Technology rooms and a dedicated Art room, along with excellent spacious grounds, a modern challenge course, and hard court areas for netball, basketball and other games.

Our teaching resources are modern, our computer network is up to date and highly specified, and our classrooms are safe and vibrant places for children to work and learn. Because we are a state, co-educational intermediate school, everything we do, everything we have, and all of our plans for the future are designed for children aged 10 -13 years old – our Year 7 and 8 students are often called the ‘emerging adolescent’. These wonderful children are going through a real growth spurt; intellectually, emotionally and physically. The staff at Kirkwood choose to work with these children, and recognise the very special attributes and challenges of this age group. We are an inclusive school which is shown in our everyday routines. We have mixed ability classes, programmes to extend and enrich all of our children and we have lots of opportunities in sport, cultural and academic areas. Our children perform

highly in so many ways, but what we think is most important is that all children work towards being the very best they can be. We maintain high standards of behaviour at our school. We are well known for our respectful, polite and pleasant children – and we expect all of our children to behave in an appropriate way at all times. Kirkwood is a very special school. Our children choose to come here, from our contributing school, leaving full primary schools or by-passing other options. The children and their parents see something about our school that appeals to them, and I believe our reputation is second to none. Visit our website www.kirkwood.school.nz or come and look around our school. We would love the opportunity to show you our school and allow you to make an informed choice. Phil Tappenden Principal

Embracing change at Merrin

M

errin is a school that is passionate, caring and committed to making a difference to the learning of our Merrin stars. We recognise that educational learning is changing, and we embrace change. Over the past year, Merrin has moved quickly to integrate technology, having iPads available in each class. Couple this with netbooks and laptops in the classroom, and our students enjoy a 1:4 ratio in accessibility to enhanced learning. Incorporating modern learning furniture in the classroom environment enables our students to collaborate and share their work more easily. Merrin integrates its modern learning techniques with the traditional, so our students are confident learners in any medium as they move through their schooling.

Pastoral Care and Learning Support are areas of strength at Merrin. There are many pressures on families at present in Christchurch, so the holistic health of our students and community are important to us. Parents are given opportunities to discuss schooling issues regularly and are always welcome in the classroom. Please contact us at Merrin and take the opportunity to view our school as an option for your child.

outh New Brighton School is presently undertaking a schoolwide inquiry about how they can encourage birdlife back to their immediate area. Last year, some of the senior students researched the estuarine water quality and when talking to city council personnel, including rangers, discovered that the ecosystem has changed substantially with saltwater going further up the estuary than before, with our land around the estuary sinking due to the earthquakes. This has meant many plant species can’t survive any longer, so have lost many of the traditional plants and trees around the estuary. This has affected our birdlife. So, across the school students are undertaking a range of inquiries, from the juniors researching what would encourage more of the birds around the school to what types of plantings around the school and along the estuary would bring back the birds.

Room 2 students (pictured) have decided to make bird feeders, and a range of them can be seen around the school. They have found it interesting to find out what different birds like to eat. Other classes are beginning to plan and build bird houses designed to cater for specific breeds and others are looking at plant and tree species. It will be exciting to see what they all come up with to help bring back the birds!

a true gem

S

t Bernadette’s Catholic School is a hidden ‘gem’ in Hornby - a place where children thrive in a values-based learning environment. Children are supported to achieve their full potential and to experience success in a variety of situations. The school provides children with a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities. The Special Catholic Character

is woven through all areas of school life and is strengthened by a positive relationship with the parish. A dedicated staff provide learning programmes to meet the needs of all students as they become confident, connected and actively involved lifelong learners. The staff would be delighted to show you around the school and answer any questions that you or your child may have.

K

irkwood is a state, co-educational intermediate school. Everything we do, everything we have and all of our plans for the future are designed for children aged 10 to 13 years old. These children are going through a real growth spurt – intellectually, emotionally and physically. The staff at Kirkwood are specialists with these year 7 and 8 children, and recognise the very special attributes and challenges of this age group. Kirkwood is an inclusive school with mixed ability classes and programmes to extend and enrich our children. We are also a very wellresourced school. We have eight specialist

technology rooms, a dedicated art room, spacious grounds, a modern challenge course and hard court areas for netball, basketball and other games. Our teaching resources are modern, our computer network is up-to-date and highly specified and our classrooms are safe and vibrant places for children to work and learn. Kirkwood is a very special school. Our children choose to come here. The children and their parents see something about our school that appeals to them, and I believe our reputation is second to none. I invite you to visit our website www.kirkwood.school.nz, or come and visit our school.

S

t Mark’s School is an integrated co-educational, full primary school from year 0 through to year 8 located in Opawa. The school is steeped in history, being established in 1921 by the vicar of St Mark’s Parish as a day school on the church grounds. Today, the school is situated in more modern buildings, in a peaceful and tranquil environment on Cholmondeley Avenue. The school’s Special Character is its strong affiliation with the Anglican Church, which includes religious instruction and observances. The school’s Mission Statement reads: “The school’s intent is to provide a Christianbased education in a balanced environment, where the children’s individual and collective needs are identified and nurtured”. The school’s curriculum strengths include numeracy and literacy, mathematics, science, social sciences and the arts to name a few, with a very strong emphasis on extra curricular activites, such as music instruction, sports and cultural pursuits.

e are different in many ways from other schools, as we focus on supporting each child to learn the strategies of life and to grow in all areas - emotionally, socially, orally, cognitively and more. We provide a meaningful education and this is evidenced by the fact that past students send their own children to Tamariki. Tamariki School was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in providing an environment that would support children to develop the awareness and abilities needed to positively impact their own lives. The founders were influenced by the Playcentre movement, the teachings of Dr M Bevan-Brown, a local psychiatrist, and the experiences and writing of the educator A S Neill. A key principle at Tamariki is that play enables children to deepen understandings about their world, themselves and others in a relaxed way. We proudly use the Maori name that has Another principle is community awareness, and frequent whole school meetings are used been gifted to us, as we truly are a childto discuss ideas and to reflect on how one focused school and we welcome children of all cultural backgrounds. person affects another.

uilt just over one year ago, you can grab this opportunity with confidence and move into a basically new home. Built by certified builders and with landscaping designed by Chris Goom, you will know that the platform for success is big and you will not be disappointed. The house consists of 258m2 facing north on a large 766m2 section with school zoning for Christchurch Boys High, St Albans Primary and Heaton Intermediate. Designed for the family with three living spaces, including a home theatre room with surround sound speakers in the ceiling, so it’s just like you’re at the movies! The kitchen is awesome with a butler’s pantry, induction hob and a convection oven, so as you can see it’s been built with a great budget and features all the extras! Heating is simple and efficient with two separate ducted heat pump systems catering for living and bedroom spaces. Warm throughout were the instructions upon design. For the family, there are four bedrooms plus a study and two executive standard bathrooms with undertile heating. Take my word for it, this is a quality property both inside and out and I recommend your viewing. DELIVERING ON “TRUST” At the risk of being completely ridiculed, I am going to stick my neck out and state that the recently released Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Occupations in New Zealand List continues to categorise real estate agents poorly. It seems we are barely trustworthy based on their survey responses and I truly believe we deserve better. Coming in at a “sad and sorry” number 44 out of 50, it sheds little light on the numerous professional improvements we’ve made as an industry.

If the profession was so poorly trusted then how is it that: • We are trusted to sell an individual’s or families most precious and significant asset- their home; • We are trusted to work with confidential information. • We are trusted to undertake any contracts in a timely and professional fashion plus we are trusted to do the right thing by our owners, and our profession, and as a company Harcourts, are the most trusted real estate brand (Reader’s Digest Award 2014).

Trust occupies a significant and special place. It provides a foundation for crucial decisions at both a personal and societal level, and whilst hard earned, it is much revered.

For me the opportunity to demonstrate and deliver trust occurs at many levels each and every day, and I know I am not the only one.

New Zealand psychologist Dr Sara Chatwin says “We trust those we feel we can rely on – people who are intrinsically stable and dependable”.

That is why it feels like a cliché to state that once again, as a profession we deserve to languish at the bottom of the list.

To my mind, trust requires certainty, credence, dependability, care and a dedication to doing the right thing. The very factors that a great many realtors possess.

I live in hope that next year we might have increased our standing, maybe even achieved into the 30’s, although those single digit trusted professions are probably a longer journey.

GARDENING

Plan ahead for your spring garden August may be a slow time in the vege patch in some respects, but there are a few things you can get on with in the weeks ahead that will put you in good stead for some bumper crops in the spring. What to plant in August: (seedlings only), broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, perpetual spinach, silverbeet and garlic. Prepare now and protect against pests. Plant the right companion flowers in August to attract beneficial insects into your garden, ready for when the pests turn up in spring! If you only have a small vege patch you may want to plant the companion flowers in pots, by doing this you can also move them around the patch, putting them close to any vegetables that pests have taken a liking to. There are many companion plants you can use, here are my top three. • Phacelia has little purpley-blue flowers that produce an abundance of pollen which attracts hoverflies. The hoverfly larvae will be your own little army of natural allies for a number of vege garden pests including aphids, scale insects, mealy bugs and psyllids. • French marigolds are fantastic repellers of both soil living pests and flying pests. A hardy, annual plant, french marigolds should have their dead flowers regularly removed to encourage new growth. They have the ability to

As a perennial it is still protecting your plants during autumn and winter when some of the other beneficial companions have died. In addition to planting beneficial companions, it is a good idea to let some of your

deter soil living nematodes as well as whitefly, and white cabbage butterfly. Known as a soil cleanser, you can just dig the remains into the soil once the plant has died. • Sage is a fantastic culinary herb, and also does wonders for the vege garden. Grown as a border or in a container, its fragrant

winter vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, pak choy and mustard lettuce go to seed, their flowers will attract the beneficial companions as well. Collect up some old yoghurt pots, egg cartons and seedling trays and recycle all your old newspapers too. It’s time to sow cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, silverbeet, celery and spinach. Later on in August, you can sow tomatoes, capsicum, melon and cucumber.

in Farringtons Tavern, 119 Farringtons Ave, Bishopdale

Canterbury Repertory Theatre is proud to be bringing this Pulitzer Prize winning play to the stage. Tennessee William's masterpiece is th regarded as an important piece of 20 century American Theatre. The Rep staged this play 37 years ago in 1977, when well know Christchurch Lawyer, Mervyn Glue who died earlier this year, was Big Daddy. Mike Adams is Big Daddy in this production. The action takes place on a single Summer evening in Mississippi. The family has gathered to celebrate Big Daddy's birthday. But all is not well with this family. Today we would call them dysfunctional. Director, Annette Searle, explores the family tensions that simmer beneath the surface, the complex relationships they have with each other. She's looking at what happens when the young can't achieve the expectations put on them by their parents, issues that are very relevant today, and wants to explore homosexuality and the family tensions that arise. Annette also wants to accent the fantasy of “the cat”- the woman, and society's preconceived notions of how she should behave.

Photo credit: Joe Hayes Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is witty and intensely dramatic. Tension accelerates as afternoon rolls into evening. Deceptions and motives are exposed against a backdrop of the sultry South and looming mortality. Annette Searle is a director with much experience in both choreography and direction and has assembled a wonderful cast and crew from some very experienced and excellent auditionees. Mike Adams as Big Daddy, Heather Giles as Big Mama, Charlie Grubb as Brick, Emma Price as Maggie, Julian Anderson as Gooper, Kat Forrester as Mae, Russell Haigh as Reverend Tooker and Warren Grenfell is Doctor Baugh. Expertly stage managed by Bernadette Richardson, with Victoria Southgate – Repertory Liaison, Brenda Hayes – Repertory Stage Director, set and lighting design, and Diane Hyde is Costume designer. A comprehensive education package is available, which schools in particular, will find very helpful.
